These pages are a modest look into whether AI understands mainframe assembler:

Generate JCL to invoke the HLASM to assemble, link and execute a program called MYBR14.

Does AI know mainframe assembler?

YES* My current experience is that these AI chatbots are better at analysing code rather than generating it.

But for now I don't think that AI can currently read dumps so I have a job for now.

Background

The testing was performed with these AI chatbots:

ChatGPT Plus (Price: $20 a month)
Grok (free version)
Google Gemini (free version and later the Pro version)
Microsoft Copilot (free version)
Claude (free version)

My employer is evaluating AI and doesn't currently allow the use of AI for code generation.
This testing was performed at home on my personal time with no mainframe access.
