Planet MVS FAQ

What is www.PlanetMVS.com?

This is a non-profit web site that is dedicated to helping fellow MVS (OS/390) systems programmers. It is a "fan" site of the MVS operating system and IBM mainframes in general.

Who runs www.PlanetMVS.com?

David Alcock, a MVS sysprog (now level 2 support person). U.S.A. For more info see my Frequently Asked Questions about Dave

Why did you start www.PlanetMVS.com?

Fortune and glory.     What in the Wide World Web was I thinking?

Shouldn't it be called Planet OS/390 Planet z/OS?

I'm set in my ways, besides: I grew up wanting to be a MVS systems programmer. And not only that, they keep changing the name, I'll stay with the "generic" name of MVS.

Isn't it narcissistic to call it Planet MVS?

You know, if I did identify with a Greek Mythological figure, it wouldn't be Narcissus...

Who would it be?
Zeus!
Okay, I stole that from a Woody Allen movie

What Planet MVS web pages should I bookmark?

  • http://www.planetmvs.com - Main page: Rarely changes. Has gratuitous graphics. If you have a fast connection to the Internet, use this one.
  • http://www.planetmvs.com/siteindex.html - Site Index: Changes infrequently when new major topics are added, but this is the easiest way to navigate around my site. If you have a slow connection to the Internet, use this one.
  • http://www.planetmvs.com/overhead/whatsnew.html - What's new on my site: The best way to know when a page gets updated. If you have a slow to medium speed connection to the Internet, use this one.

What Planet in real life would represent Microsoft Windows?

That would have to be the 7th planet from the sun. Also, the quote from the movie Starship Troopers fits: "It's an ugly bug planet!".

Who did you write these pages for?

The Planet MVS web site was written for a target audience of OS/390 (MVS) systems programmers. Other users of IBM mainframes may derive some benefit but that would be purely unintentional.

I mis-read or mis-used something from the www.PlanetMVS.com web site and it caused me untold grief and suffering, can I sue your pants off?

The www.PlanetMVS.com web site IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND WITHOUT ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTIBILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

I'm a headhunter, should I send you an email about job opportunites?

NO! I'm quite happy at my current job gig.

I don't see a JES2 to JES3 command list on your pages, do you have one handy?

Yes, this is VERY out of date, but if you can stand a little dust here's a 1980's JES2 to JES3 commands list

What is the official freeware Rexx of the www.PlanetMVS.com web site?

Regina Rexx

I see an error, misspelling, broken link, etc. on one of your pages, will you be offended if I point it out?
