Setup requirements

• Install the Firefox web browser
  
  
• Install DownloadThemAll Firefox Addon
  
  
• Your Mac already comes with Python installed for you. Sweet!
  
  Or go to the Python site to download for other platforms.
  
  
• Install pyPdf (PDF library for Python):
  
  
  • Download the .gz file with pyPdf
    
    
  • Change to the directory with the downloaded .gz file
    

    cd ~/Downloads

  • Uncompress the TAR file:
    

    tar -zxf pyPdf-v.rr.tar.gz

    
    
  • You will now have a directory called pyPdf-v.rr (where v.rr is the current version and release) in that ~/Downloads/ directory, so change to it:
    

    cd pyPdf-v.rr

    
    
  • Build the pyPdf library:

    python setup.py build

    creating build/lib/pyPdf
    copying pyPdf/__init__.py -> build/lib/pyPdf
    copying pyPdf/filters.py -> build/lib/pyPdf
    copying pyPdf/generic.py -> build/lib/pyPdf

    copying pyPdf/utils.py -> build/lib/pyPdf
    copying pyPdf/xmp.py -> build/lib/pyPdf
    

    
    
    
  • Install the pyPdf library. You will be prompted for your adminstrator password now because the sudo command was used...

    sudo python setup.py install

    copying build/lib/pyPdf/xmp.py -> /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf
    byte-compiling /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf/__init__.py to __init__.pyc
    byte-compiling /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf/filters.py to filters.pyc
    byte-compiling /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf/generic.py to generic.pyc
    byte-compiling /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf/pdf.py to pdf.pyc
    byte-compiling /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf/utils.py to utils.pyc
    byte-compiling /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf/xmp.py to xmp.pyc
    running install_egg_info
    Writing /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/pyPdf-1.12-py2.5.egg-info
    

    
    
    pyPDF should be installed now for use by Python if the build and install worked
    
    
• Verify that pyPDF is working by getting the Python script from this blog. and saving it as a text file (I called mine PDFList) in the same directory that has PDF files:
  
  

  python PDFList
