A Mailing List is a discussion group that you need an Internet Mail Reader to view.
A Newsgroup is a discussion group that you need a Newsreader to view.
Hint: Microsoft Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator/Messenger have combination mail and newsgroup readers.
When you subscribe to a Mailing List, do yourself a favor: save the unsubscribe information
Everybody does this at least once: Don't send mailing list commands to the list, send them to the list manager.
I get my mailing lists in Digest mode so I only get one email a day for all traffic on the Mailing List To do this, send the command "HELP" to the listserver. Usually the command is "SET listname DIGEST".
Some Newsgroups and Mailing Lists are obtainable as Newsgroups or Mailing list. For example, the IBM-MAIN Mailing List that is echoed to the bit.listserv.ibm-main Newsgroup.

Before you pass along information about the latest virus that to a newsgroup or mailing list, make sure it's not a hoax. At a minimum, check some of these sites first:
Don't be a dope, don't pass on a Hoax. This also includes spreading "Urban Legends" like the recent Neil Armstrong Urban Legend thats totally bogus.
